{"id":96,"date":"2015-09-13T13:47:14","date_gmt":"2015-09-13T13:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/catsforharper.ca\/?p=96"},"modified":"2015-09-13T13:47:14","modified_gmt":"2015-09-13T13:47:14","slug":"destruction-of-libraries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cats.vttoth.com\/?p=96","title":{"rendered":"Destruction of libraries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ostensibly it is all about cost savings and moving on to more modern forms of digital content delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the rationale, in recent years Mr. Harper&#8217;s government closed several federal research libraries, the contents of which: books, journals, other print material,\u00a0mostly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/capt-trevor-greene\/science-cuts-canada_b_4534729.html\">ended up in dumpsters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, it appears that only a small fraction of the destroyed material has been digitized.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-97\" src=\"http:\/\/catsforharper.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/canada-libraries.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cats.vttoth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/canada-libraries.jpg 720w, https:\/\/cats.vttoth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/canada-libraries-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This wholesale destruction of knowledge is simply appalling. Not trying to draw any false analogies here but nonetheless, images of Nazi book burning come to mind. And one has to wonder: is it simply a result of ignorance, is it a sign of this government&#8217;s ideology-inspired contempt for science, or is it something more sinister, specifically targeting areas of research the results of which are incompatible with the conservative political agenda?<\/p>\n<p>Whatever it is, a government that is trying to save taxpayer money by burning or trashing books is not fit to govern.
